Estate & Legacy Planning Coordination

A will names who gets what; insurance and beneficiary designations decide how quickly and tax-efficiently it actually arrives. We make sure the insurance pieces of your legacy line up with the plan your attorney drafts.

We coordinate the insurance side of your estate plan — beneficiaries, life insurance, and long-term-care strategy — alongside your attorney and tax advisor.

Why estate planning matters — for everyone

Estate planning isn't just for the wealthy. It's about making sure your wishes are honored, your family is protected, and your assets go where you intend — without the stress and expense of probate. Without a plan, Florida law decides who gets your assets, who cares for your minor children, and who makes medical decisions for you.

The four core documents

A complete plan usually rests on four pieces:

  • Last Will & Testament — directs how your assets are distributed and names guardians for minor children.
  • Living Trust — avoids probate and keeps things private, transferring assets to beneficiaries without court.
  • Power of Attorney — lets someone manage your finances if you're incapacitated.
  • Healthcare Directive (living will) — states your medical wishes so your family doesn't have to guess.

Who should have an estate plan

Short answer: every adult — but it's especially important if you:

  • Own a home, business, or significant assets
  • Have minor children who need designated guardians
  • Want to avoid probate and spare your family time, money, and stress
  • Have specific wishes about medical or end-of-life care
  • Are recently married, divorced, or widowed — or approaching retirement

How we help (and beneficiaries beat the will)

We don't replace attorneys — we coordinate the insurance side and connect you with professionals we trust. That matters because life insurance and retirement accounts pass by beneficiary designation, not by your will, so an out-of-date form can send money to the wrong person no matter what your documents say. We review your designations across every policy, identify gaps, align your life insurance, Medicare, and retirement plans with your wishes, refer you to trusted estate attorneys and CPAs, and check in as your life changes.

This page is educational and not medical, tax, or legal advice; figures change and should be confirmed for your situation.

FAQ

Common questions

Do you write the will or trust?

No — that's your attorney's role. We coordinate the insurance and beneficiary side and can refer you to estate attorneys and CPAs we trust. This is planning coordination, not legal or tax advice.

Do I need a trust or just a will?

A will goes through probate (a public court process); a trust avoids probate and keeps things private. For many homeowners with assets, a trust offers real advantages. We help you assess which fits your situation, then connect you with the right attorney.

How does this relate to my insurance?

Your insurance beneficiary designations override your will. We review all your policies to make sure your beneficiaries are current and aligned with your overall estate plan — our initial beneficiary review is always free.

How much does it cost to work with Mere Benefits?

Nothing extra. Plan prices are set by the carriers and are identical whether you enroll on your own or with a licensed agent — we're paid by the carriers, so our guidance is free to you.

How do I get started?

Call or text (904) 654-5450, email info@merebenefits.com, or use our contact form. We'll set up a relaxed, no-pressure conversation — in person on the First Coast, or by phone and video.

Are you independent, or tied to one insurance company?

Independent. We aren't captive to a single insurer, so we compare the options across the carriers we represent and recommend what fits you — not what pays us most.

Will I have to change doctors?

Not if we can help it. Before recommending a plan we confirm your doctors are in-network and your prescriptions are covered, so keeping your care is part of the decision.

Can you help by phone and video, or only in person?

Both. We meet clients in person across Northeast Florida and Camden County, GA, and serve all 11 of our licensed states by phone and video.
