Medicare & Travel Coverage

For snowbirds and frequent travelers, coverage away from home is a make-or-break detail. Your Advantage-versus-Supplement choice largely decides how portable your Medicare really is.

Medicare travel coverage at a glance

How well your coverage travels depends entirely on which path you chose:

Coverage typeInside the U.S.Outside the U.S.
Original Medicare (A+B)Covered nationwideGenerally not covered
Medigap (Plans C, D, F, G, M, N)Covered nationwideForeign-travel emergency: 80% after $250 deductible, up to $50,000 lifetime
Medicare Advantage (HMO/PPO)Network-based — may not cover out-of-area routine careUsually not covered; some PPOs offer limited emergency coverage

Why Supplements suit travelers

Because Original Medicare is accepted by providers nationwide, a Medigap Supplement lets you get covered care anywhere in the country without network worries — ideal if you split the year between states or travel often. Advantage plans, by contrast, are network-based and can restrict routine care when you're out of your service area (though emergency care is still covered).

Traveling abroad — and why travel insurance matters

Original Medicare generally doesn't cover care outside the U.S., and even the best Medigap plan only covers foreign-travel emergencies up to a $50,000 lifetime limit. Medicare also generally doesn't cover care on a cruise ship. For real international protection, frequent travelers often pair a Medigap plan that has foreign-travel emergency coverage with a standalone travel-medical policy that adds:

  • Medical coverage in any country
  • Emergency evacuation and medical transport
  • Trip interruption and cancellation benefits
  • Prescription coverage while abroad (Part D usually won't cover fills outside the U.S. — refill before you go)
  • A 24/7 travel-assistance hotline
FAQ

Common questions

Does Medicare cover me if I travel to another state?

Original Medicare covers you anywhere in the U.S. that accepts Medicare. Medicare Advantage plans are network-based and may not cover routine care outside their service area, though emergency care is still covered.

Does Medigap cover international travel?

Some Medigap plans (C, D, F, G, M, N) include limited foreign-travel emergency coverage — 80% of costs after a $250 deductible, up to a $50,000 lifetime maximum. Beyond that, a dedicated travel-medical policy fills the gap.

I'm a snowbird between Florida and another state — which plan is best?

Most snowbirds are best served by Original Medicare plus a Supplement, since it isn't tied to a local network. We'll confirm the setup that keeps you covered in both homes.

Are you connected to Medicare or the government?

No. Mere Benefits is a private, independent agency and is not connected with or endorsed by the U.S. government or the federal Medicare program. We don't offer every plan available in your area — to review all your options, contact Medicare.gov or 1-800-MEDICARE.

How much does it cost to work with Mere Benefits?

Nothing extra. Plan prices are set by the carriers and are identical whether you enroll on your own or with a licensed agent — we're paid by the carriers, so our guidance is free to you.

How do I get started?

Call or text (904) 654-5450, email info@merebenefits.com, or use our contact form. We'll set up a relaxed, no-pressure conversation — in person on the First Coast, or by phone and video.

Are you independent, or tied to one insurance company?

Independent. We aren't captive to a single insurer, so we compare the options across the carriers we represent and recommend what fits you — not what pays us most.

Will I have to change doctors?

Not if we can help it. Before recommending a plan we confirm your doctors are in-network and your prescriptions are covered, so keeping your care is part of the decision.

Can you help by phone and video, or only in person?

Both. We meet clients in person across Northeast Florida and Camden County, GA, and serve all 11 of our licensed states by phone and video.
