Medicare for Veterans

Veterans with VA or TRICARE coverage face a unique Medicare decision. The two systems can complement each other, and passing on Part B can be a costly mistake. Here's how to coordinate them.

This mission is personal

Helping veterans coordinate their benefits is not a market segment for Kate — it is family. Service runs through several generations of hers, across the Army, the Navy, the Air Force, the Merchant Marines and the American Field Service, from the Second World War through Korea and the Cold War posting in Germany. Her parents are currently serving a two-year volunteer mission supporting Marines at Camp Pendleton.

That is why the questions on this page get answered properly rather than quickly — the enrollment timing, the penalty that is easy to trip, and the coverage a VA card does not reach.

Do veterans need Medicare? Usually, yes

VA benefits are valuable, but Medicare adds flexibility that VA care alone can't. Four reasons most veterans enroll:

  • Access to more providers — VA care is limited to VA facilities; Medicare opens the door to any Medicare-accepting doctor, hospital, or specialist.
  • Shorter wait times — VA appointments can take weeks; Medicare lets you see private providers right away.
  • Coverage when traveling — VA care outside your region can be limited; Original Medicare covers you anywhere in the U.S.
  • Avoiding penalties — delaying Part B without qualifying coverage can trigger a permanent late-enrollment penalty.

VA care doesn't cover the civilian world

VA benefits cover care at VA facilities, but not treatment from civilian doctors and hospitals in an emergency or when a VA facility isn't practical. Medicare Part B fills that gap. Declining Part B to rely on the VA alone can leave you exposed — and trigger a lifelong penalty if you enroll later. Importantly, VA coverage does not count as creditable coverage for Part B, so delaying it is risky.

How TRICARE For Life fits in

For military retirees, TRICARE For Life acts as a supplement to Medicare — but only if you enroll in Medicare Parts A & B. Once you do, TRICARE For Life covers most of what Medicare doesn't, which is why keeping Part B is usually essential for retirees.

What we help veterans with

Our guidance for veterans is free, and it focuses on making the pieces work together:

  • Understanding how VA benefits, TRICARE, and Medicare coordinate
  • Determining the right time to enroll in Part B
  • Comparing Advantage plans that suit veterans
  • Coordinating prescription coverage between the VA and Part D
  • Connecting you with additional benefit programs

Coordinating both for the best of each

Many veterans keep VA coverage for prescriptions and VA care while using Medicare for civilian providers. We help you weigh Part B, drug coverage, and whether an Advantage or Supplement plan adds value on top of your VA benefits.

FAQ

Common questions

I have VA benefits — do I really need Medicare too?

Often yes, at least Part B, so you're covered for civilian and emergency care outside the VA. VA coverage doesn't count as creditable coverage for Part B, so skipping it can create gaps and a lifelong penalty. We'll help you decide based on how and where you actually get care.

Can I use both VA and Medicare for the same visit?

Not for the same visit — you choose which to use each time. VA facilities use VA coverage; private providers use Medicare. Having both simply gives you maximum flexibility in where you get care.

Does TRICARE work with Medicare?

Yes. TRICARE For Life supplements Medicare for military retirees, but you must enroll in Medicare Parts A & B to keep it active. It then covers most costs Medicare doesn't.

Are you connected to Medicare or the government?

No. Mere Benefits is a private, independent agency and is not connected with or endorsed by the U.S. government or the federal Medicare program. We don't offer every plan available in your area — to review all your options, contact Medicare.gov or 1-800-MEDICARE.

How much does it cost to work with Mere Benefits?

Nothing extra. Plan prices are set by the carriers and are identical whether you enroll on your own or with a licensed agent — we're paid by the carriers, so our guidance is free to you.

How do I get started?

Call or text (904) 654-5450, email info@merebenefits.com, or use our contact form. We'll set up a relaxed, no-pressure conversation — in person on the First Coast, or by phone and video.

Are you independent, or tied to one insurance company?

Independent. We aren't captive to a single insurer, so we compare the options across the carriers we represent and recommend what fits you — not what pays us most.

Will I have to change doctors?

Not if we can help it. Before recommending a plan we confirm your doctors are in-network and your prescriptions are covered, so keeping your care is part of the decision.

Can you help by phone and video, or only in person?

Both. We meet clients in person across Northeast Florida and Camden County, GA, and serve all 11 of our licensed states by phone and video.
