What Is Medicare, and Why Does It Matter to You?

If you are turning 65, retiring soon, or already receiving Medicare, you probably have questions. That is completely normal. Medicare can feel overwhelming at first — but it does not have to be.

At Mere Benefits, our job is to make Medicare simple for you. We help seniors in Jacksonville and across Florida understand their options so they can choose a plan that fits their health needs and their budget.

This guide will walk you through the basics of Medicare — what it covers, how the parts work together, and what to watch out for during enrollment. Think of it as your friendly starting point.

Medicare is a federal health insurance program available to people who are 65 or older, or to certain people with disabilities. It is not the same as Medicaid.

The Four Parts of Medicare Explained Simply

Part A: Hospital Coverage

Medicare Part A covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health services. Most people do not pay a monthly premium for Part A if they or their spouse worked and paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years.

Part B: Medical Coverage

Medicare Part B covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and medical equipment. Unlike Part A, Part B has a monthly premium. In 2024, the standard premium is around $174.70 per month, though this can vary based on your income.

Part A and Part B together are called Original Medicare. They provide solid coverage, but they do not cover everything. That is where additional plans come in.

Part C: Medicare Advantage

Medicare Part C (also called Medicare Advantage) is an alternative to Original Medicare. These plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. They bundle Parts A and B, and often include dental, vision, hearing, and prescription drug coverage — all in one plan.

Many Medicare Advantage plans have $0 premiums, making them popular in Jacksonville. However, they typically use networks of doctors and hospitals, so it is important to check whether your current doctors are included.

Part D: Prescription Drug Coverage

Medicare Part D helps cover the cost of prescription medications. It is available as a stand-alone plan if you have Original Medicare, or it may be included in a Medicare Advantage plan. Costs and covered medications (called a formulary) vary by plan.

Medicare Supplement Plans (Medigap): Filling the Gaps

Original Medicare covers about 80% of your approved medical costs. The remaining 20% — including copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles — is your responsibility. That can add up quickly.

A Medicare Supplement plan, also called Medigap, is designed to cover some or all of those out-of-pocket costs. These plans are standardized by the federal government, which means a Plan G from one company offers the same basic benefits as a Plan G from another company.

The main difference between Medigap plans is price. That is why working with a local advisor like Mere Benefits can save you real money — we compare plans across multiple carriers so you do not have to.

Key focus: Medigap plans allow you to see any doctor in the U.S. who accepts Medicare. There are no networks, no referrals required, and no geographic restrictions. This freedom is important for snowbirds and frequent travelers.

  • Plan G: One of the most popular plans. Covers nearly all out-of-pocket costs after the Part B deductible.
  • Plan N: A lower-premium option that still offers strong coverage.
  • Plan F: Only available to those eligible before January 1, 2020.

When Can You Enroll in Medicare?

Timing matters when it comes to Medicare. Missing an enrollment window can result in late penalties that stay with you for life. Here is what you need to know.

Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)

Your Initial Enrollment Period is a 7-month window around your 65th birthday — starting 3 months before the month you turn 65 and ending 3 months after. This is the best time to sign up. If you sign up on time, you avoid any late penalties.

Special Enrollment Period (SEP)

If you are still working at 65 and covered by an employer health plan, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period when that coverage ends. This allows you to enroll in Medicare without a penalty, even if you are past your Initial Enrollment Period.

Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)

Each year from October 15 to December 7 is the Annual Enrollment Period. This is the time when anyone on Medicare can make changes to their plan — switching from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan, changing drug plans, or switching Advantage plans.

At Mere Benefits, we reach out to our clients every year during this period to review their plan and make sure it still fits their needs. Plans and prices change — and what was right last year may not be the best option this year.

Why Focus Matters When Choosing a Medicare Plan

One of the most important things we teach our clients at Mere Benefits is the power of focus when evaluating Medicare options. There are dozens of plans available in Jacksonville. Without a clear focus, it is easy to get distracted by flashy benefits you may never use — or to overlook coverage that matters most to you.

Focus means asking the right questions before you choose a plan:

  • Which doctors and specialists do I want to keep seeing?
  • What medications do I take, and are they covered?
  • Do I prefer the freedom of Original Medicare with a Supplement, or the bundled benefits of Medicare Advantage?
  • What is my monthly budget for premiums?
  • Do I travel often or live part of the year outside of Florida?

When you answer these questions first, the right plan becomes much clearer. Our advisors at Mere Benefits will guide you through each of these questions step by step — no pressure, no jargon.

Why focus is relevant: Most Medicare mistakes happen when people choose a plan based on price alone or based on a TV commercial. A focused review of your personal health needs leads to better choices and fewer surprises throughout the year.

Common Medicare Mistakes to Avoid

Many people make preventable mistakes when enrolling in Medicare. Here are a few of the most common ones — and how Mere Benefits helps you avoid them.

Missing the enrollment window

Signing up late for Part B or Part D can result in permanent monthly penalties. The Part B penalty adds 10% for every 12-month period you were eligible but did not enroll. That penalty stays with you for life.

Assuming employer coverage counts as Medicare

COBRA and retiree health insurance are not the same as Medicare. If you are relying on either of these after leaving your job, you may still have a limited window to enroll in Medicare without penalty. Our team at Mere Benefits will help you navigate the transition.

Not comparing plans every year

Medicare plans change annually. Drug formularies change, premiums change, and plan networks change. Staying on the same plan year after year without reviewing it could mean you are overpaying — or missing out on better coverage.

Choosing a plan without checking the drug formulary

Not all Medicare plans cover the same medications. If your prescriptions are not on a plan's formulary, you could end up paying full price at the pharmacy. Always verify your medications are covered before you enroll.
